There are over 7 billion people on this planet and almost 70% of the entire population owns a gadget of some sort. We cannot dream of a life without gadgets but there is one important thing that gives a gadget its life, Its an Operating System or simply OS. Gadgets (Computers, Smartphones, Smartwatches, etc.) have evolved over time and the same has OS.
We all know that computers don`t understand human languages, so to convey our message we need a mediator and that mediator is OS. Operating System is a program that acts as a mediator between a computer user and the computer hardware. OS collects our input and turns it into a computer-readable language to get the desired task done by the computer hardware. It is not possible for the user to communicate with any computer without any operating system.
Android leads the Operating System market with an outstanding market share of 41.46%. Windows and iOS hold the 2nd, 3rd position with a market share of 30.61% and 16.07% (Until Jun 2021, source- Statcounter).
We will be talking about the latest editions of Windows, Android, and iOS OS`s and how these upgrades will make them safer, smoother, and personalized.
What Windows 11 will be offering?
Microsoft recently showcased their new Windows 11 on June 24. Personally, it felt like a lot has improved in this new version of Windows. From revamping the home screen User Interface to the security, Windows 11 is a lot different from its predecessor.
Starting from the new look of the home screen, the Start menu has been put in the center of the screen and a fresh look has been given to the icons. A translucent look is added everywhere starting from the taskbar to the widgets feed. You can customize your widgets, pick new crazy-looking themes, use the snap group for viewing multiple apps according to your liking.
Windows is known for its bulky updates which almost take a year to get installed but that was the thing of the past. In Windows 11, updates will be 40% lighter and will happen in the background without interrupting your work.
From the perspective of security, the Windows team has done a great job by removing the hassle of downloading 3rd party apps from websites. Name any app and you can just download it directly from the Microsoft store without compromising your security. Microsoft is switching to a zero-trust security approach across all of its platforms. Microsoft has heavily increased the hardware requirements for Windows 11 in order to provide added protection from cyberattacks.
One of the major system requirements for installing Windows 11 is having a computer with Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 2.0 chip. A TPM chip is basically used for carrying out cryptographic operations, and includes “several physical security mechanisms to make it tamper-resistant,” Microsoft said. TPM makes it hard for Malicious software to tamper with the security functions.
With Windows 11, we are focused on increasing security, improving reliability, and ensuring compatibility. This is what drives our decisions. Microsoft team said in their recent blog.
In Windows 11, security capabilities such as hardware-based isolation, secure boot, and hypervisor code integrity will be turned on by default, the Microsoft team said.
“Windows 11 enhanced security by requiring hardware that can enable protections like Windows Hello, virtualization-based security (VBS), hypervisor-protected code integrity (HVCI), Device Encryption, and Secure Boot,” the Windows team said in its blog post.
By using these features in combination on test devices it has reduced malware by 60 percent, Microsoft said in the blog post.
Android Apps coming in Windows. During the launch event, the Windows team announced they will be partnering with the Amazon Android store to bring Android apps to Windows 11. A big relief from emulators :-). Microsoft is also going to remove some default apps like Internet Explorer, Cortona, Onenote, 3D viewer, Paint 3D, Skype, and many more. Windows 11 is currently in its beta phase and is expected to come out before the end of this year.
Talking about Android 12
Google recently gave Android its major overhaul after Android 5. Google has always hoped to reduce the gap b/w Android and iOS but previous versions of Andriod were simply not enough for the task. Android 12 altogether has taken this game to a whole new level by throwing some drastic features in its latest version. Android 12 has ticked all the boxes right from UI/UX to privacy.
Staring from the new User Interface (UI). Android 12 brings the biggest design change in Android’s history. We rethought the entire experience, from the colors to the shapes, light, and motion, making Android 12 more expressive, dynamic, and personal, the Android team said in their blog.
Google is currently working on a design language called Material You. Material You pick up the color scheme of your wallpaper and customizes everything according to the colors. Google has also redesigned the widgets making them more beautiful, and useful. Round cornered design applied in icons and the widgets provide a fresh look to the whole system.
A bunch of other features like animations while clicking, charging animations, Strech scroll, smoother audio transitions, lock folder in Google photos are some new additions in the new Android family.
There is a significant improvement in the performance of Android 12 by making apps faster, smoother to provide a rich experience for the user. System performance is increased by a big margin to enhance performance (whatever hardware you`re using) and reduce power consumption. All these performance changes will help to increase smartphone penetration rates as low-end devices will be able to run more smoothly.
Whenever we talk about privacy, Google simply turns its face but with Android 12 it seems like Google is trying to change that image. While Android is currently in its Beta phase, Google has announced a list of new features Android will be getting in Beta 2. Features like privacy dashboard where you can check which sensors were used by which apps and when, microphone and camera toggle for alerting you about usage, Kill switch for camera and mic.
App hibernation intelligently hibernates apps according to their usage and reclaims memory, storage, and other temporary resources. There is also an option for the precise or approximate location which you can select according to the app you want to use. Private compute core is another security feature that stores data generated from Live Caption, Now Playing, and Smart Reply directly on your device instead of in the cloud.
What`s in the iOS 15 update?
Apple during its virtual Worldwide Developers Conference announced iOS 15 launches which are set to release this fall. These new iOS 15 updates will bring some new features as FaceTime calls, tools to reduce distractions, enhanced privacy features along with a complete redesign of notifications, Safari browser, Weather and Maps app.
FaceTime gets SharePlay, a feature that lets you keep FaceTime conversations going while watching TV shows, movies, listening to music, or share your screen with SharePlay to watch together with your family and friends. These features enhance the experience to a whole lot of different levels and bring the feel of closeness especially needed during these covid times.
With Spatial audio, you get individual voice sounds directly coming from the direction in which each person is positioned on your screen during the video calls. Focus is a new tool that is meant to help you stay focused during your crucial times. Select the apps you want to receive notifications from and you`re ready to enjoy a soothing dinner or maybe an outdoor trek.
Maps and Safari also got a complete redesign with Maps showing more details in 3D like 3D landmarks present in both day and dark modes, step by step direction indications with AR and Safari getting one hand touch mode for easy swiping b/w the tabs, New tab bar design to give more focus to the page content.
Other features include Live text in photos which is actually similar to Google Lens but with less functionality, a trending feature in the Health app, dynamic redesign of the weather app.
Finally the privacy part. iOS 15 introduced new privacy features, such as Hide my Email which instantly generates random email addresses that forward to your personal email inbox — so that you don’t share your real email address while filling out a form or signing up for a newsletter. Hide My Email feature is inbuilt in Mail, Safari, and iCloud Settings.
Mail Privacy Protection hides your IP address to prevent senders from determining your location and detecting whether the email has been opened or not. Siri requests will now be processed directly from the iPhone to provide better responsiveness. App Privacy Report is another cool feature that shows you how often apps use the permission they have been granted.
There are plenty of tweaks that we could not cover in this blog simply due to the size constraints. So this was it, We tried to uncover that Are Operating Systems really becoming safer, smoother, and more personalized.
Hope you enjoyed this short trip and See you guys in the next blog. Peace!!!
